Switching from a visitor visa to a work permit or PR status in Canada is not always straightforward, but under the right conditions, it’s possible.

Canada doesn’t typically allow direct conversion of a visitor visa to a work permit from within the country—unless the visitor has a valid job offer supported by a positive LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment). However, due to recent public policies, temporary measures have sometimes permitted visitors to apply for work permits from within Canada.

To switch to PR from a visitor status, one must still go through standard immigration streams like:

  • Spouse Sponsorship (if married to a Canadian or PR)
  • Express Entry, if eligible and selected while inside Canada
  • PNP, for provinces that allow inland applicants

The key is maintaining legal status while in Canada. Restoration of status may be required first if the visa has expired. Consulting an immigration expert is wise, as the pathway involves technical steps, timelines, and document accuracy.
