- Days 1 to 90: restoration window. You may apply to restore your status. You must stay in Canada, and you cannot work or study until it is approved.
- Day 91 onward: window closed. Standard restoration is no longer available. Options include leaving and reapplying, a Temporary Resident Permit, or an H&C request, and each needs a strategy.

Your Options

|---|---|---|
| Extend before expiry | Your status has not ended yet | Filing before expiry may let you keep working or studying while IRCC decides. |

| Leave and reapply | The window has closed or restoration is not suitable | Needs a plan to avoid a refusal or a bar on returning. |
| Temporary Resident Permit | Serious grounds or special circumstances | Discretionary. Needs strong reasons and evidence. |

Loss of Status FAQs
My Permit expires in 30 days
File your extension before it expires. Filing on time may let you keep working or studying under the same conditions while IRCC decides (maintained status). Processing takes months, so do not wait, and check that you meet the requirements before you file.
My PGWP expired. What Now?
A PGWP generally cannot be extended. If you filed a new work permit application before it expired, you may be able to keep working under maintained status. If you did not, you may still have up to 90 days to apply for restoration. Do not work after expiry unless you are covered.
I stopped Studying my study permit expired/expiring/what is my status
You may be able to restore your status within 90 days, including as a visitor if you no longer plan to study. Eligibility depends on why you stopped and whether you followed your study conditions. You must stop studying until restoration is approved.
My work permit expired? My employer did not renew it
If it has been 90 days or fewer, you may apply to restore your status, as a worker with a valid job offer or as a visitor. You cannot work until it is approved. We check your dates and your employer’s obligations before you file.
This page is general information, not legal advice for your case. Send us your letter for a personal deadline check.
My extension was refused
Your status generally ends on the date of refusal, and the 90-day restoration window starts from then. Stop any unauthorized work or study, and request a review right away. Filing another application without a plan can make things worse.
I overstayed as a Visitor
If you are within 90 days of your status ending, you may be able to restore it. Beyond that, the options narrow. An overstay can affect future applications and may lead to enforcement, so early advice matters.
I missed the 90 day restoration window
Standard restoration is closed, but you may still have options, such as leaving and reapplying with a plan, a Temporary Resident Permit, or a Humanitarian & Compassionate request. Each depends on your history and needs a strategy. Request an urgent review.
My refusal application was refused
We review the refusal reasons and your file to decide the next step. Options may include a new application where the rules allow it, a reconsideration request, or a Federal Court review, which has short deadlines and requires a lawyer. Act quickly.
My PR Card expired. Did I lose status?
No. An expired card alone does not end permanent resident status, but you need a valid card or a travel document to return by air, train or boat. Renew it, and keep track of your residency obligation of 730 days in any five-year period
