Study Permit - First Step Then College Choice - Save Money and Time

An Admission Letter is Not a Study Permit. Two Decisions. Two Different Files. One Plan

Kay Cee Immigration Services RCIC-IRB Licensed Firm

A Canadian study permit is a decision about your education, your money, your career and your future. Before you choose a college, pay a deposit or transfer funds, make sure the whole plan holds together.

Why Plans Fail? They Start With The College and Then Study Permit

Most students choose a college first and think about the study permit afterwards. That order puts families at risk. A college admits you on your academic record. An immigration officer decides whether you are a genuine student with a credible plan, enough funds and a reason to leave when your studies end. Both decisions must rest on the same facts, so the plan has to be built in the right order.

With immigration laws and student visa rules constantly evolving, careful planning is essential. Understanding the dual application process, financial implications, and visa officer expectations helps build a stronger case. Both applications should be grounded in the same clear, consistent story.

Our Approach Student First, Permit Second, College Third

Our Approach

1. Can this student realistically obtain a study permit? We start with the permit, because it is the decision that can end the plan. We review immigration and travel history, previous refusals, ties, admissibility, funds and their source, language results, timeline, and whether the study plan is credible.

2. Who is this student? We assess academic record, language scores, work experience, aptitude, career direction and the family’s financial capacity, including years two and beyond.

3. Which program and college fit that student? Only now do we choose. We match the program to previous studies, future goals and budget, and check designated learning institution (DLI) status, attestation letter availability, graduate work permit (PGWP) eligibility, language requirements, total cost, location and whether the institution is public or private.

4. Apply: the admission file and the permit file, together. We build the two files separately from the same facts, so the college and the officer see one consistent story.

Our team of Advisors match the student’s profile to the right college and the right permit strategy; To make sure  a strong admission does not turn into a refusal.

Four Myths That Cost Families Time and Money

Admission Letter Guarantees Visa

Admission decision is made by the college. Study permit is the officer's decision, based on evidence. Documents may be sufficient to grant admission but may not be enough to grant visa. 408,000 is the total visa across all cohorts. The 309,670 applications for PAL-required students are planned to yield 180,000 per year.

Sufficient Funds Qualify for Visas

Funds are one of the four important factors. Officer also wants validation through your application that program fits your educational goals and past history, and whether you will leave Canada when your studies end. Funds required -m $23,448 (outside Quebec)

A Good Academic Record Guarantees Entry

It helps but doe snot replace clarity for your intention to go for the program for which you are applying, and the intent to return back to home country after completion of the program.

Language Score As Needed Is Enough

College graduates need CLB 5 in all four skills, and university graduates need CLB 7. Aim for language score higher than the expectations as we are competing for admission and visa across all levels and Immigration Officer looks for anomalies in RWSL skills at the interview to validate your scores.

                                                                                            Frequently Asked Questions

Does Admission letter mean I will get a study permit?

No. The school admits you. A separate immigration officer decides the study permit, based on your study plan, proof of funds, past studies and work, and whether you will leave Canada when your studies end.

First visa applicants of any category are sent a Biometrics letter. It is simply identity verification and record for future use. It does not guarantee visa.

At least CAD $22,895 for a single applicant outside Quebec, plus first-year tuition and travel. The amount is higher for each family member. Check the current figure on IRCC’s site before you apply.

A Provincial Attestation Letter confirms the province has allocated you a place under its cap. Some students are exempt, including master’s and PhD students at public institutions. Quebec uses a CAQ instead. We confirm which applies to you before you pay a deposit.

It depends on the institution, program length (at least 8 months), and, for non-degree programs, the field of study. IRCC has frozen the eligible field-of-study list for 2026. All applicants need a language test (CLB 7 for degrees, CLB 5 for college programs). Check the program before you pay.

Up to 24 hours per week off campus while classes are in session, and full-time during scheduled breaks. Link to work

  • Since Jan 21, 2025, a spouse’s open work permit is only available if the student is in a master’s of 16 months or longer, a doctoral program, a listed eligible program, or certain university professional degrees (law, medicine, nursing, engineering and similar). College students are not covered.
  • Their spouse can instead apply for a visitor visa, their own study permit, or a work permit that needs a qualifying job offer.
  • A study permit holder cannot sponsor a spouse for PR. Only a citizen or permanent resident can.

The study permit is $150. Processing times change weekly and vary by country.
