Work Permits
Study → Post-graduation work permit →Trades work experience → Apprenticeship or certificate of qualification → Express Entry FSTC/Draw
Canada needs electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, millwrights and other tradespeople, and trades work is often project and contract based. Whether you can do that work in Canada depends on your work authorization, not only on your skills.
Three questions to answer first
- What is your work authorization? An employer-specific work permit covers only the employer named on it. It does not let you take contracts from other clients or work for yourself. An open work permit or permanent residence does. We check this before you accept any contract.
- Is your trade eligible? Pathways depend on your exact occupation (NOC code). Eligible lists change, and cooks and chefs were removed from the Express Entry trades category in February 2026.
- Are you qualified to work in Canada? Many trades are regulated by province. You may need an apprenticeship, a certificate of qualification, or a Red Seal credential. This varies by trade and province.
What we cannot promise
No step is guaranteed. Rules, draws and eligible occupations change, and a trades pathway does not promise a job, a contract or permanent residence.
